Unlike some woodland burial grounds, we do not plant trees with each burial. The woodlands at Barton have been planted in consultation with the Forestry Commission to create mixed deciduous woodland. They are planted in a glade pattern, with burials taking place in the glades.
The trees (over 9000 of them) number among them small-leaved lime, ash, pedunculate oak, field maple, hazel, birch, aspen, hornbeam, Scots pine, holly, white willow, woodland hawthorn, wild service, spindle, wild cherry, and crab apple. Whilst new trees are not currently being planted at the Ground, in order that the existing trees be given time to develop, the Arbory Trust operates a tree adoption scheme, whereby trees at the ground can be adopted in memory of loved ones. The fee for each tree adopted is £50, and each adopted tree bears a numbered tag. This corresponds to an entry in the Tree Log which records the Adopter, and if desired, the name of the person in whose memory the tree is adopted. Whilst it is not always possible to adopt a tree close to a particular grave for obvious reasons, we encourage people to consider the woodland as a whole, and we are always happy to choose a tree on your behalf. To adopt a tree, simply enclose a cheque for £50 with a covering letter to our administrative offices in Ely, with your name and address, and any preferred type of tree or location. Our Assistant, Imogen, is very happy to meet with you to discuss the trees in greater detail. |
